If you like a cigar that’s brimming with personality, Joya de Nicaragua has hit it out of the park with the Antaño Gran Reserva.
And by “personality”, I mean a cigar that has not only an abundance of flavours & aromas … but one where the smoke practically speaks to you while you hold it in your mouth prior to retrohale.
This cigar has great body, formidable strength, fantastic construction, sturdy handfeel and a sense of place.
Pre-Light, the entire length of the cigar delivered an amazing aroma of Oak.
Not just a little oak … more like an entire cellar full of oak.
And that was just from the foot and the wrapper.
I really like that in a cigar.
Something that grabs your attention even before you light up.
The Raw Draw filled my palate with big gulps of Chocolate Milk.
When I smoked the Antaño Gran Reserva Bellicoso, there was a lot going on.
The 1st draws after lighting it revealed roasted coffee, roasted meat and even more woodsy/mossy aromas.
But then something really interesting happened when I had to rest the cigar to answer a knock at the door.
When I returned a few minutes later … there was this beautiful, lush scent of fresh fern throughout my #CigarHerfRoom.
That kind of blew my mind.
Almost to the point where I’d have been content with just that aroma – the scent of fern emitting from the cigar smoke in the air was just that pleasant.
But there were more great billows of impressions to come.
The Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Gran Reserva rewards you with so much smoke, it’s just a natural to retrohale like a pro with every single puff.
If there was ever a Retrohale Grand Championship Competition – this is the cigar I’d want to use!
The solid white ash with grey striations fell at the 1/2 way point.
The taste of the cigar transitioned from woodsy/mossy & fern to deep, dark cocoa & fresh espresso.
As the Antaño Gran Reserva approached the final 3rd, the cigar finished with Pencil Shavings & Cedar.
Antaño Gran Reserva Bellicoso Strength is med+ … from one end to the other.

From Joya de Nicaragua:
The Antaño Gran Reserva asks you to do one thing only: to keep daring.
It carries the same character as the Antaño 1970
but instead uses select extra aged, tobaccos only.
Over 15 years ago the Antaño cigar defined the standard of full bodied cigars.
The Antaño 1970 is an iconic cigar in the Joya de Nicaragua portfolio.
Not only because of its unprecedented strength, and rich Nicaraguan character,
but also as our best seller cigar in the US.
The process of creating the Antaño took over
50 samples in a period of 6 months to complete.
The Antaño is exclusively crafted by hand and
entirely of Nicaraguan harvested tobaccos.
This cigar is an ultra robust, spicy smoke which showcases the authentic
5 years later we came up with a bolder variation of the Antaño Dark Corojo.
This cigar takes the boldness of the Nicaraguan tobacco even further, because of its Doble Ligero fillers.
Thus, and to solidify the Antaño family, and as before announced during our latest Facebook Live, we have come up with another iteration: The Antaño Gran Reserva.
“The main alteration that comes with the Antaño Gran Reserva is that we have added fillers that have been aged for up to five years. As a result, we have obtained a more refined and mature version of the Antaño 1970.” said Juan Ignacio Martínez, Executive President of Joya de Nicaragua at a meeting room at the factory that many Antaño enthusiasts have visited.
Our Factory Manager further commented
“We are excited to introduce this cigar at IPCPR 2017,
with the Antaño Gran Reserva we are further solidifying our portfolio by adding to our line of Nicaraguan original cigars.”
The refined and matured Antaño Gran Reserva can be found in three different presentations:
- Belicoso 6×54
- Robusto Grande 51/2 x52 Box Pressed
- Gran Cónsul 4 ¾ x 60
The Antaño Gran Reserva will begin shipping in August 2017
